Biography
Liverpool-born Sue Cartwright studied art at Northwich College in the 1980’s and later at Jacob Kramer Textile Design College, Leeds.
The decline in the textile industry, work circumstances and the economic climate of the time led to Sue retraining and spending seven years working in a drawing office. After leaving the drawing office to look after the children a further 3 years was spent working from home.
It was during this period that the opportunity arose to focus and to pursue once again her passion for painting.
The many years of experience and training have led to a professional and key work ethic. Sue’s main focus
is on colour, shape, design, drawing and, alongside her draughting skills, to also use different mediums including watercolour and pastels in producing a wide variety of work.
The inspiration for all the paintings have come from Sue’s personal experiences and from her hobbies.
Her fascination for motorbikes and visiting the Isle of Man TT have played a major part in inspiring and creating paintings which capture speed, light and colour, all very much part of the atmosphere of the races. Over the years private collectors, riders and pubs have commissioned work from the various locations along the TT course.
Living close to the River Mersey for the past 28 years has also enabled Sue to develop an interest in dinghy sailing. With a good knowledge about the various classes of boats and sailing in different locations she has been inspired by the challenge to create movement and to interpret the role played by key elements in the painting’s construction.
Travel has also been a major influence and inspiration in her works, capturing the colours and ambience of different countries visited. This has led to experimenting with a variety of media to create the desired image.
Her passion for painting and drawing extends into teaching where Sue invites and encourages others into her exciting world of art.
A number of years have been spent working with adult learners, including those with disabilities and those on a program of prescription for health. Sue also presents art workshops in and around her home town of Warrington, in addition to talking about and demonstrating her skills.
